Biography of WANG Ning

Dr WANG Ning, mentor of Ph.D, male, born in 1954. He studied double bass and be a part time conductor when he was in Art School during 1975-1978.  Graduate from the school in 1978, he was matriculated in Composition Department of ShenYang Conservatory of Music began study and composition.  Main compositions were ‘Solo for Violoncello’, ‘String Sextette’, ‘Grand Chorus’, ‘Symphonic Suite for Grand Orchestra “The Four Seasons of North of China” ’, performed by the orchestra of The Opera House of Liaoning province and recorded by the broadcasting station of Liaoning province, and his thesis <The Configuration of Melody> had completed in 1982. Then he was engaged as composer in The Opera House of Harbin. With a great deal of works of composition, music research, give lectures, folk music collecting and so on.  In 1985 he was matriculated as a graduate student in Central Conservatory of Music, and he achieved his dissertation: <The Orchestration Art of Debussy>, and two orchestra compositions: ‘Symphony for String Orchestra’ and ‘Symphonic Fantasy for Orchestra’ and got the M.A. degree.  The comment belauds: ‘This dissertation is a treatise which discourse upon Debussy’s orchestration art all-round, and provide with extraordinary establishment’. With Outstanding achievement, he was invited to China Conservatory of Music to teaching composition and orchestration at The Composition Department, and appointed as the director of the staff room of orchestration and analyse.  And he got the Ph. D degree in composition major from Central Conservatory of Music also, and he completed his doctorial dissertation of <Source and Course and Development of Chinese National Orchestra>, that it have done research and probe in the Chinese national orchestra, obtain experts highly appraised: ‘This work has directed against the question that nowadays exist and put toward perspective original opinions of having much with future development, …… There are higher useful value and academic value, it is a high-quality academic work’.

Now he is the professor, director of the Composition Department, director of Multimedia Music Center of China Conservatory of Music. And he is council member of Chinese Musicians' Association, standing committee council member of Chinese Orchestra Association of China, council member of Beijing Musicians' Association, vice-president of Electroacoustic Music Association of China, member of Chinese Copyright Association of Music, member of Beijing Contemporary Music Association, council member of Learned Society of Film Music. He had been the judge of many music competition, prize and music publication in China and abroad.  And he ever had been the head of delegation of Chinese Musicians’ Association and other units visit abroad. He obtained many composition award both domestic and abroad, and participate in domestic and international academic meeting and music festival on invitation, and publish the works and thesis while.

The types of WANG Ning’s music composition are wide, dabble extensive, the kinds of types as symphony, opera, concerto, national instruments orchestral music, chamber music, electronic music, chorus and art song etc.. He has the distinct individual characteristic of creating music, and especially he has deep thought intension and to the sincere care of realistic society and human destiny in his music. His creation idea in composition is: ‘regard individual character then study western technology and practise traditional culture’.  WANG Ning has practiced his idea in composition for many years, that is: 'One center and two fundamental points', which means: individual character is the center, and merge composition technique of west and tradition culture of China. He had won a lot of composition prize in China and abroad and his compositions often been performed in China and overseas.  He was commissioned by China and abroad and always been invited attend international music festival and proseminar and come out with his compositions and thesis.  He was reported by many magazine, publication, newspaper, television and broadcasting about his art and compositions. Because of his achievement, he was chose through public appraisal as Excellence Mainstay Professor of Beijing Altitude College in 1993 and obtained many prize such as ‘China Academy Award’, ‘Standout Person Contribute to the Prosperity of Capital Literature Enterprise’ etc.. He is listed in many thesauruses of musician, artist and talent archives.  His students' compositions had won a lot composition competition prize and they are working in China and abroad and become a ridge beam in composition and education in music.
